Sony PSP2 (NGP) Announced

The rumors are true! Sony at a event at Tokyo today has unveiled the PSP2 Codenamed NGP, or the Next Generation Portable device.

The biggest thing is that Sony claimed that the PSP2 can produce PS3-like graphics, much like how the original PSP can produce PS2-like graphics. They even got the device up and running with game demos!

Even Kojima himself have did a very quick port of Metal Gear Solid 4 to the PSP2, with no optimization to the code what-so-ever, and it ran smoothly at about 20FPS.

I’m buying for sure when it releases.

Pictures from Sony Japan:

The device sports this features:

  • 5-inch OLED touchscreen with 960×544 resolution (PSP resolution is 480 × 272)
  • ARM Cortex A9 Quad Core CPU
  • SGX543MP4 GPU
  • Storage: Some sort of new mini flash storage (Good bye slow loading games.)
  • Touch pad on the back
  • 3G and Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11b/g/n connectivity (3G will be the first for portables)
  • Cameras on the front and back
  • Dual analog sticks (Finally)
  • SIXAXIS controls (Gyro + Accelerometer)
  • GPS
  • Built-in stereo speakers, mic
  • Bluetooth 2.1+EDR
  • Size: 182.0 x 18.6 x 83.5mm (It actually looks the same size as the current PSP)

Not too sure about their new interface though, hope it’s improved, or fixed by themes, as always.

The new flash media. No more UMDs, no more slow loading games, easier storage.

Touchpad on the back of the PSP2, seems like more actions can be done using this touchpad.

White color’s available too, but I think black’s nicer.
